I just put together the kit and when I connect I see the ATMega
[163690.833828] usb 1-1: new full-speed USB device number 9 using xhci_hcd

[163690.999292] usb 1-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=2, SerialNumber=0

Is this normal.? The software says it can't connect.

Do you see anything on the screen? Any LEDs flashing when you power up?
